Edge Presents - The art of videogames

Ok well I noticed on Kotaku about an edge presents book, much like the edge files, so I looked at the link to it on the Edge website, and I noticed it came out today, so I quickly took the bus down to get it as Edge sells rather well in sunny old Newport.

So after a few bus rides and £8 quid later I had the book, well I guess it could be called a book...almost. But yes so I flicked through it on the bus ride back, there are some very interesting bits to it, and also some rather boring bits in my eyes.

A nice piece of gow2 artwork

The first bit to amaze me, which was also the first game mentioned in it, was the section on Rez, I had never really seen any art for Rez. So it started with a few images which were merged with screenshots put together so I thought oh is this it, and then I turned the page and was astonished by the lovely pictures.

Lovely pictures

As Mizuguchi and his team decided on for the concept of "nothing to something" and well I feel that fits Rez rather well, and with what they continue saying in the book.

Another nice point about the book is that through-out it there is pictures from the I am 8-bit collections, and well this one has to be one of my favourites.

I think he's had maybe one too many

There are many good points to the book, one of which includes mentioning Jet Set Radio and having pictures.

Jet Set Radio one of the best games ever

Now if it had some on The Nomad Soul as well it'd be the perfect thing for my essay choices.

There are some good pieces of work in it, like the pages of God of War II concept art which actually have to do with the game from the looks of it, but I was very disappointed when I came across the Shenmue section in it, as when I turned the first page of it I realised that was it, Shenmue is depicted in two images, yet things like Burnout or Fight Night get double what Shenmue was given. Although a little baffled with the image of the girl but I can only guess that it's *EDIT* Shen Hua.

I want more!

It has some lovely Okami images, including a double page image, but then again who needs that when you have a whole book full of it.

One of my favourite art books now

But other than the Shenmue bit it's a rather good book, I'd say it's worth £8 as well Edge is really pricey now and it has more than an issue would have, plus it focuses on art. I recommend any art type people at least have a look at it in your local whsmiths or newsagents places (and it's available in America too).

Oh yes only thing I'm a little confused on is there seems to be a image of Leon Belmont on the back, yet no Castlevania section, I guess this means there will be a volume 2 maybe?
