Two Hundred and Eighty Seven: My thoughts on Skylanders

So I'm your average Spyro the Dragon fan, I specifically enjoyed the games back when they were developed by Insomniac games. So my favourites are most probably Spyro, Spyro 2 and Spyro Year of the Dragon.

However of course Enter the Dragonfly and the newer "Legend of Spyro" series were still enjoyable games and visually looked a lot better than Spyro in his PS1 days.

However Spyro seems to of taken a big change of character design as of recently in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. Spyro was always a fairly cute, headstrong but sometimes silly, little purple dragon. He had some slightly annoying friends but he always helped sell the game and they weren't a bad series of platformers.

However Skylanders has taken the original Spyro design and made him edgy and less cute in some aspects. He does have the face smashed in by a frying pan look, which to be fair can be adorable, like a pug. However it feels like he's taken a bit of a turn for the worst.

I respect what XPEC have done with the game, from what I hear it's not doing to bad in stores, and adds a different element to games in a more vinyl aspect. Which is surprising as there hasn't been a huge amount of similar games released, especially with all the different motion controllers and cameras available for consoles at the moment. However with the current trends in the market I suppose it's no surprise that Spyro is a little grittier in style than cutesy as I believe gritty sells more these days.

Perhaps the original Spyro will return in the future, I for one hope so!
